There are redesigned user interfaces in Windows 8. The “Start Button” is replaced by the “Start Screen” and displays “tiles” that link to a limited set of programs and features for various options. Moreover, those important setting functions in Windows 8 are activated by “Swipe From Edge” gesture. For examples, if you swipe from the right of desktop to the left, it will display charms bar for searching, sharing and system setting, etc.; and if you swipe from the bottom to the top on the start screen, it will display an app bar for setting the applied programs.

PenMount’s latest version of Windows Universal drivers V2.4.0.306 has been successfully obtained the Windows 8 digital signature and added many new functions, these new functions are:

1.  Choose Digitizer or Mouse device during installation. Mouse device will be installed directly in systems that do not support digitizer devices.

Digitizer device is no longer set as the default setting, but users can select the setting on their own. If you want to learn more about the difference between Digitizer and Mouse device, you can refer to the “Windows” section in PenMount FAQ.

While you are using mouse device in Windows 8, you shall find that its operating ways are varied to digitizer device. For example, charms bar will be displayed when the mouse cursor is moved to the top right or bottom right screen corner, and the full “Start Screen” will be shown when you click the bottom left corner of screen.

2.  Automatically detect RS-232 device on COM Port and install drivers.

The automatic detection system has already supported to check whether a PenMount device is connected to COM Port or not in this driver version, and install the appropriate driver.

3.  PenMount Universal drivers support both resistive and projected capacitive controllers simultaneously.

PenMount Universal drivers support the touch products with USB and RS232 hardware interfaces on PenMount PCI controllers, and the digitizer device is designed for those PenMount PCI touch products with USB, which it can be plugged and played in Windows 7 or Windows 8. Due to Windows 2000 / XP operating systems cannot identify digitizer device or need to operate with mouse emulation, you will need to install the driver if you use USB interface. Furthermore, if you use PCI touch products with RS232 interface, you need to install the driver provided by PenMount because the operating system doesn’t have a build-in driver.

• Projected Capacitive Input Total Solution
  In recent years, AMT has put much effort in developing PCI touch panels. We already launched 18 models, and these models are fitted all the sizes of industrial LCD monitors, such as 3.5″ – 7″ PCI touch panels are mated with COF (Chip on FPC) design; for 8″ or larger than 8″ PCI touch panels are mated with different types of control boards. Due to the sizes of PCI touch panel are varied, different numbers of driving lines and sensing lines are used for different sizes of touch panels. Therefore, AMT has designed 6 various size ranges for PCI touch panel users:

• 3.5″ – 7″: Usually, COF tail are used in small size PCI touch panels; however, there are two controller options for 5.7″ – 7″ touch panels: one is PM1201 control board, in which charge pump is designed on this control board that it can detect signals accurately by increasing voltage; the other one is COF tail.
• 8″ – 10.4″: We offer 8.4″ and 10.4″ standard PCI touch panels, they are mated with PM1300A control board or PM1301B control board. Besides, PM1301B control board will be certified to EN-61000-4-3 and EN-61000-4-6, noise and radiation can be resisted by PenMount’s firmware.
• 10.1″: This item will be first released at Electronica 2012, it is mated with PM1610 control board and both USB and I²C are the available interfaces for you to choose. Our objective is that this touch panel can be certified to Windows 8, and it supports 10 simultaneous touch points.
• 12.1″ – 15″: There are three size options, they are 12.1″ (4:3)、12.1″ (16:9) and 15″. PCI touch panels are designed with three tail terminators and they are mated with PM1400 control board. There are two IC on the PM1400 control board which PenMount’s P2 controller are used on it, and it supports thick glasses with dual simultaneous touch points.
• 15.6″: As what we introduced in the News Express last time, 15.6″ PCI touch panels are mated with PM1500 control board and supported glass thickness of 5mm. We are continuing to improve firmware functions and let it be operated smoothly with gloves.
• 21.5″: It is a large size PCI touch panel with supporting 10 simultaneous touch points and fulfills the requirement of Window 8. This is the great outcome to AMT as we worked hard to research and develop for the whole year.

Moreover, AMT’s PCI solution won’t have error signal if there is water drop on the touch panel surface. This is because PenMount’s firmware function is designed with professional technology to deal with water problem, and noise interference is the first problem that we have to solve. But for those request of thick glass and operating with gloves, AMT’s PCI solution can satisfy these requests.

PenMount continues to develop new PCI controllers and drivers, beyond the popular supported operating system like Windows XP / Vista/ 7 and CE6.0, PenMount also provides Linux and Android driver source codes for you to program the drivers to your microcontroller.

PenMount PCI controller firmware can be updated in customer side, we will add new features to the firmware from time to time and upload the latest firmware version in our website. Besides, if it is necessary for you to update the firmware, we can provide the latest firmware version based on the interface and operating system that the customer is used after you contact to our sales person or distributors. Then customers can update the latest firmware version of PenMount PCI control board by using the updating program「PmFu.exe」, the details for update firmware is explained in our PenMount PCI user’s guide.

Nevertheless, one of the special features of PenMount PCI controller is that it can support different thicknesses of cover glass. As we listed the six PCI controller models supported in which thickness of cover glass in the table above, customers can base on the cover glass thickness and panel size to apply the appropriate PCI controller on their products. The available sizes of standard PCI COF touch panels are ranged from 3.5″ to 7″, these size ranges depend on the current industrial use of LCD. Besides, we also offer 7″ PCI COF touch panels with black printed glass, thus this can fulfill for those who require handheld products with true flat touch panel in one place. Generally, the three main system interfaces—UART, USB and I²C can be used in our PCI COF touch panels, but different system interfaces are supported by different COF tail models, such as USB can only be used in 5.7″, 6.5″ and 7″ PCI COF touch products.

The structures of AMT PCI COF touch panels are Glass-Film-Film, the thicknesses of 3.5″ to 7″ PCI COF top glass are 1.1mm, both single and dual touch operations are supported. P3012-CGA 7″ PCI décor glass touch screens are designed for applying on small-size hand-held products, thus COF design is used—the controller is designed on the tail; P3008-0GA 10.4″ PCI décor glass touch screens and P3009-0GA 12.1″ PCI décor glass touch screens are designed for integrating with the controllers of PenMount PM1300 and PM1400 respectively. Part numbers of AMT standard PCI products are presented as P30xx-yGz, in which “xx” are the sequence number, “y” represents whether the product is COF tail designed or not, but if “y” code is 0, that means COF tail isn’t used for this product. “G” represents that the product is used a standard décor glass by AMT, and if the last code “z” is A, that means version A is used for this product.

Some of low reflective products in the market are used linear polarizer, and some of them are used circular polarizer design. The light reflection rate of linear polarizer is about 6% – 9 %. AMT’s low reflective touch panel is a circular polarizer designed with adding retardation film and anti-reflective film, which the reflection rate is about 1.5%. Comparing to standard FG type touch panels (its reflection rate is about 16% – 22%) or linear polarizer designed touch panels, the reflection rate of AMT’s low reflective touch panel is relatively low. Moreover, light transmission rate of this low reflective touch panel is greater than 76%, it perfectly suits for applying on outdoor handheld devices or notebooks/ laptops.

As different materials are used in designing a low reflective product, these materials have different rate of thermal expansion coefficient. Therefore, pillowing or rippling may occur under a high temperature environment. AMT realized this problem, so we developed wide temperature products more than a year ago, in which the specifications on operating temperature and storage temperature have been enhanced, the pillowing problem caused from different rate of thermal expansion coefficient have been solved. Thus, both standard low reflective products and wide temperature products can be designed into 4-,5-or 8-wire touch panels. However, if the temperature difference between the glass layer and the top surface of the low reflective touch panel is large in a very short time, it may have some slight pillowing or rippling on the touch panel surface, and this is a normal physical phenomenon. When the temperature between the glass layer and the top surface of the touch panel becomes similar, this slight pillowing or rippling will disappear.

For the type of handheld electronic products such as smart phone and tablet computer we see nowadays, the operating system used by them is Android 4.0, and as for the operating system used by Ultrabook, it is Windows 8; moreover, both types of operating systems can support touch applications with at least five points, enabling the products to have multi-touch function.

There is also a trend in shift to other Windows or Linux operating systems, to begin to support multi-touch function. In PenMount, we have heard a lot of inquiries in highlight to multi-touch both from markets and on applications, and people would like to understand what the coverage and restrictions are supported by PenMount on both single touch and multi-touch applications. Briefly to make introduction here for you on operating systems, amongst them, of which are single touch and of which can support multi-touch function:

There are various branches of Windows operating systems, and on the aspect of desktop system, operating systems, such as Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, are all adopted with simulation by mouse for screen movement, and can only support single touch, moreover, not until Windows 7 operating system, other than with definition on touch function categories, it has also started to embed various software applications for supporting multi-touch function, while there are stricter definition to regulate on acquisition of Windows 8 logo qualification for multi-touch applications of Windows 8, and if you have any questions in relation to Windows 8 logo, please feel free to contact us.

On the aspect of embedded systems, starting from Windows Embedded Standard 7 and Windows Embedded Compact 7 to support multi-touch function, and for the embedded system platforms, they themselves are part of operating systems as components, that is to say, if you are in need to use multi-finger touch, it is necessary to include any corresponding components, taking for example, on Windows Embedded Standard 7, a component software of Tablet PC Feature is required, and on Windows Embedded Compact 7, it is required Touch Gesture GWES component to extend multi-finger touch effect, whereas for old versions, such as Windows XP Embedded, Windows CE .NET 4.2, Windows CE 5.0, and Windows Embedded CE 6.0, all of them can not support multi-touch applications.

Linux has also started to develop multi-finger touch applications, for which are most prevalent for Android operating systems, starting such application from Android 2.1, up to the latest Android 4.1, while for others, there are also Linux components to come along with support of multi-finger applications since 2012, for example: Ubuntu 12.04, openSUSE 12.2 and Fedora 17, moreover, for HID driving utility, Kernel 3.0.0 is already with support of multi-finger touch, and X Window used by it starts to support X Input Protocol 2.2, i.e. Multi-Touch API, both are required to put together for usage, in order to extend the effects of multi-finger touch applications.

The top layer of AMT Touch Window is a graphic overlay with printed graphic to optical laminated onto the resistive touch panel, and this will enable the keys to be designed directly on the printed part in the surroundings of touch panel; for the edge of touch panel and its four corners, any shape can be cut and ground according to the designs of the customers, as to the wiring of tail, one can choose to drill a hole on the ITO glass or with a notch on the edge. AMT possesses with unique technologies, and even with treatment procedures, such as cutting, edge grinding or hole drilling, the Touch Window will still be kept with its good linearity.

Framed Touch is true flat touch panel design innovated and patented by AMT, similarly as Touch Window, it is required to do treatments as grinding and fillet; the difference between the two is the latter without requiring for one additional Graphic Overlay, instead to print the frame directly on top ITO Film on the surface layer of touch panel, now with available style in black frame matching silver logo. In comparison to the design of Touch Window, the transparency of Framed Touch is better, by the way, if you would like to adopt true flat touch products with black frame, Framed Touch will be just the perfect choice to fit your need.

Currently, we are able to provide the largest size for both Touch Window and Framed Touch is 380x480mm, and the light transparency rate for both is greater than 78%, moreover, with the tailor-made sizes and designs, there are flexible and multiple choices for your preference. There are more and more hand-held products in the market and request for projected capacitive touch application, so this year, we have made introduction with the design of Projected Capacitive touch panel COF (Chip On FPC), that is to say, to directly weld the control IC onto the FPC tail. In this way, there is less mechanical space required on product assembly, and it is easily to assemble it inside the hand-held products. Currently, PenMount offers two kinds of COF controllers: the first type is PM2101 COF controller, and it can support touch panel from 3″ to 4.9″; the second type is PM2201 COF controller, and it can support touch panel from 5″ to 7.9″. For the FPC tail of PenMount COF, there are 10 pins in total, and the system interfaces offered by it are include UART, I²C, SPI and USB; however, for USB interface, only the second type-PM2201 is equipped with such a feature.

No matter it is control board or COF style for the PenMount Projected Capacitive products, all of the PenMount driver utilities will offer support simultaneously, and the systems already support for, Windows XP / Vista / 7, Windows CE 6.0, and Windows Embedded Compact 7, while all of the driver utilities can also be operated under different interfaces. Besides, for the operating systems of Embedded Linux and Android, we offer source code to our clients for their developments.

There are continuous reinforcements of functions for PenMount Projected Capacitive touch controllers, while the firmware versions are updated from time to time; moreover, on our website, we will make updates of the latest versions of firmware for various interfaces at any time, and our clients can make updates with direct execution under the operating systems of Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / 7 & Linux through firmware update utility-” PmFu.exe “.

The 5-day Golden Palm itinerary to Malaysia was boisterously taken place on June 13, and all of our colleagues were so excited to take the flight on their way to the capital of Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur. Due to transitions in times, there were a lot of different ethnic groups to live together in the parts of the country, while the eastern elements and western cultures were so cleverly mingled with one another, to create unique features of their own imprints. We made visit to the historically cultural ancient city-“ Melaka ”, where there were still buildings and ancient relics left behind by the rulers of the imperial period, seemingly to bring people back in time. Next, we made our trip to the newest travel landmark — Golden Palm Tree Resort, a vacationing heaven in which the sky and the ocean were merged into one color, and a design to incorporate with its surrounding environment as well as natural eco systems, plus to take a strolling around the extensive golden sand beach, allowing one to get rid of all worries, in order to achieve relaxation for their mind and body. Afterwards, we went to see KL (Kuala Lumpur) Tower, which was ranked no.4 in height around the world, and took speed elevator up to the height of 276 meters away from the ground, as well as saw the beautiful sceneries of Kuala Lumpur in bird’s eye view, while everyone just become totally relax all of a sudden. On the first day of our trip, we went to Shihan (Mt. Our colleagues marched forward to the top of Taiwu Mountain, to pay respect to the magnificent landmark of Kinmen- the rock with inscription of “ (Wu Wang Zai Ju)-Don’t forget national humiliation in time of peace and security ”. Our colleagues took boats to Little Kinmen on the second day, and visited “Hujingtou Battle Museum ”, which was the harbinger in the front line, as well as the broadcasting station to make maneuver on the tactics of psychological wars. In the afternoon, we even took hiking of underground civil defense tunnel in Chincheng district, in a total length of 2.3 kilometers, all the way to Shueitou Cultural Village for exploring the past ambience of old western house. On the third day, we went to the symbolic indicator of Kinmen spirit-“ Juguang Tower ”, in which there were detailed introduction on the history, tourism resources, and natural ecology of Kinmen, as well as there were collections of many artifacts, on the top of the tower, one can look far away to the other side of the strait, while there was atmosphere of tranquility and full of green scenery in front of the tower, with a sense of elegance and antiquity. Next, we went to the major sight for bird watching in Kinmen -“Ci Lake”, and here one could even look over Little Kinmen and grandiose scenery of Mainland China! We also tasted locally renowned specialties of Kinmen, including Gongtang (Kinmen Peanut Candy), Kao-liang Wine and vermicelli, and another major feature of Kinmen was the knife made from artillery shell! Everyone had a very good time, and all things came to an end, while it was a time for us to say goodbye on such a fulfilling journey.

This Monday all of our colleagues went back to their own posts, and those who took trips were quite joyous on their recalls of the trip experiences; for those colleagues who got cancelled of their trip due of weather factors, they also took some days off for some rest as well. During the period of our employee trip, our clean room production machines and electrics were also under maintenance and care, and everything went successfully and smoothly in completion. After short period of break and recharge, all of our AMT colleagues are all full of energy, and we anticipate having more superb performances in the late half of the year.

PenMount 1500 Projected Capacitive Touch Control Board

On the basis that there are always requirements with support of thick glass from industrial computer, PenMount 1500 is already equipped with such feature and can support 15.6” projected capacitive touch panel with glass of 5mm thickness; moreover, one can make flexible operations with dual touches, and it is definitely a major help on the industrial products. • Advanced Resistive Touch Solution:

1. Touch Window & Framed Touch:

5. MF (Multi-Finger) Resistive Touch Panel:

What is COF? Mainly it is to directly mount PenMount PCI controller onto FPC tail of the projected capacitive touch panel, and the host interfaces available in COF tail are to include UART, USB, I²C and SPI. While the equipped interfaces by the different controllers are varied, as a result, the USB interface will only be offered on two scale sizes of PCI COF at 5.7″ and 7″ only.

We are going to make introduction of our new touch panel products with Glass-Film-Film structure for the AMT PCI COF product series, and the product reference numbers for 4.3″, 5.7″ and 7″ are respectively as P3015-C20, P3010-C20, and P3012-C20. The series of touch panel for the size of 4.3″ is matched with PenMount 2101 COF controller, while both touch panels at the size of 5.7″ and 7″ are with selection of PenMount 2201 COF controller; moreover, all of the scale sizes in the series are with adoption of surface glass at 1.1mm thickness, to possess agility and smoothness in operations, and are auxiliary to the functions of both single and dual fingers. AMT is estimated that the three scale sizes of PCI COF series touch panels will be started with goods delivery one after the other after the end of second quarter this year.

Due the design concept on the PCI COF series of AMT is different from our other PCI product designs, there is no addition of EMI layer in the bottom, then we design special algorithm in firmware on handling noise, however we suggest that you make selection of LCD modules from better brands, or to pull enough gap between touch panel and LCD when finding noise interference after assembly of PCI COF touch panels. On the other hand, if the LCD modules you have selected are with more noise, or there is high electromagnetic interferences in the system, or the products you are required to match with thicker surface glass, you can make selection on the projected capacitive touch panel with Glass-Film-Film-Film structure plus our PenMount control board, in the way, the situation of systematic interferences can be effectively prevented.

We are also going to make developments on the PCI COF touch panels at the scale sizes of 3.5″ and 6.5″ in succession. Taking into account there are needs for larger scale size of projected capacitive touch products, we have also started to develop a scale size at 15.6″, and hopefully with more complete product scale sizes, we are able to satisfy the needs of different market applications. AMT has continuously made efforts on the researches and developments of the projected capacitive touch products, to work towards a direction of diverse applications, and we expect to bring to you with touch products in higher quality and better reliance.

Other than the release of above new products, PenMount will also provide various kind of assisting services on the driver utility. Linux is an operating system with open source code, and due recently it is becoming more prevalent on the industrial computer markets, there are a lot of different versions of Linux in the market; moreover, along with the diversities on the end products of Linux, the touch driver utility will be varied according to different versions of Linux. Linux can be installed in the various kind of computer hardware (for example, cellular phone, tablet computer and desktop computer); on the other hand, as long as with compliance to GNU General Public License (GPL), any system can make utilization of Linux base original source code, plus to be capable of making revision and another release. PenMount fully supports Linux operating platform, and will allow you to quickly use touch functions on your products.

Besides, the calibration utility offered by Linux touch driver utility is relatively too simple, and for the resistive touch panel with different resistance value design, the precise calibration program is not available. On the basis that the demands of projected capacitive touch (PCI) are getting more popular, in the recent two years, PenMount has also started to make research and development designs on the PCI products. Whether it is the small size of 3.5” or the big size of 15”, all the way up to the size of 21.5” for the projected touch panels, and according to the various kinds of sizes, we offer different kinds of touch controllers in different driving lines and number of sensing lines. Currently, we have already made development of touch controllers with six types based on PCI sizes, and on each type of touch controller, there is offering of interfaces in connection with the host, such as USB、RS-232、UART and I²C; whereas for the driver utility, the integration driver between WinXP/Vista/7 and Win CE 7.0, as well as the suite issued last year to be tailored to Linux (for example, Ubuntu, Fedora and SuSE), all of which are supplied with corresponding driver by PenMount. Besides this, PenMount also offers a fine-tuning software of PCIMset to be operated on the Windows operating system, allowing the clients to easily make parameter correction on both machinery and environment for fully extending the advantage of application on the projected capacitive.
