Linux is an operating system with open source code, and due recently it is becoming more prevalent on the industrial computer markets, there are a lot of different versions of Linux in the market; moreover, along with the diversities on the end products of Linux, the touch driver utility will be varied according to different versions of Linux. Linux can be installed in the various kind of computer hardware (for example, cellular phone, tablet computer and desktop computer); on the other hand, as long as with compliance to GNU General Public License (GPL), any system can make utilization of Linux base original source code, plus to be capable of making revision and another release. PenMount fully supports Linux operating platform, and will allow you to quickly use touch functions on your products.

Besides, the calibration utility offered by Linux touch driver utility is relatively too simple, and for the resistive touch panel with different resistance value design, the precise calibration program is not available. As we all know that whether or not a touch product can bring out a good efficiency, not only do it to be in relation to touch panel and touch controller, but final product assembling is also a very important key part. Last June, in the News Express of AMT, we have made introduction on the excellent functions of AMT 5-wire touch panel; moreover, with our unique circuit design, we have extremely high preciseness on operation, and at the same time, we make continuous efforts to work on reliability. For example, we make a change with insulation treatment for areas outside of active area of 5-wire touch panel, and this enables no action to be created if there are contacts by mistake, and we have removed the designation of view area from the drawing.

One year later after the change, in order to have more definite design reference with our clients for their designing personnel of mechanical components, in the commencement of May this year, we are going to add the designation of ‘Adhesive Opening’ for our newly designed drawing of 5-wire touch panel. In the drawing of standard products from AMT, we will also make updates of this designation in succession.

When designing mechanical parts of the products, the contact place between the front bezel and the touch panel should be on Adhesive Opening area that is also named DSA (double side adhesive) area, not on either view area or active area. Supposedly, after the product is assembled with front bezel, to discover that when cursor always fixes to a point on the screen, or there are occurrences of continuous error touch, and this is possibly due assembling of product mechanical material, either the front bezel or gasket is pressed to the active area by mistake. When assembling, if instead of putting the fixing point of front bezel on the DSA area of touch panel, there will be fewer occurrences of error contacts. Besides, in the middle area between the front bezel and touch panel, there is generally a gasket material, and due the material density of gasket is varied, once being pressured, there is also possibility of error contact within the active area of touch panel from the difference of compression ratio of gasket; as a result, we would like to make recommendation that when designing the size of gasket, it should be with shrinkage inward about 0.5mm in the DSA area of touch panel (as shown in below figure). However, as how much should the gasket to be shrunk inward in reality, it is subject to the material of the selected gasket. Through such a design, it will be able to effectively avoid error contact of resistive products by the front bezel.

In the product drawings of both 4-wire and 8-wire, we have all made clear designations of active area, view area and DSA area. Thus, similarly, we will do the same on the product drawings of 5-wire, to make designation of DSA area to our clients, enabling our client to have better precision and convenience when doing designs on product mechanical components.

Generally speaking, the operating temperatures for LCD can be divided into two types: standard and extensive. In a standard LCD module, the operating temperature is from 0°C to 50°C; while that of a temperature extensive LCD module is from -30°C to 85°C. In other words, when applying LCD below its operating temperature, the response time will become very slow, and that is why in order to quickly show a normal display in cold regions, it is necessary to heat up the LCD.

In the past, we have two ways to increase the temperature; one is to put on a heater with adhesion on the back of LCD module, and with this method, it will firstly heat up objects of display, such as backlight and iron frame, afterwards, the temperature will then be distributed to LCD panel; in such a way, it requires higher rate of heating efficiency as well as energy. Another is to place a transparent heater between LCD panel and the diffuser plate of backlight module, with direct heating on LCD panel, the advantage of this method is concentrated heating, short timing, and smaller heating power; however, by applying this method, it could damage the optical structure of original ones, with reduction on luminance and sealing nature of backlight module, plus it is required to make change on the structure of LCD module. On the other hand, if we combine the heater with touch panel on the back, the touch panel components with heating functions are to be embedded in the front end of monitor within the LCD, it will be no longer required to open up as well as to fix LCD module, under such a circumstance, it can be more easily to solve the heating problems of LCD.

AMT has introduced touch panel with heater, and the heater is made from one piece of ITO glass with low resistance value, which is laminated to the back of touch panel; moreover, the product is with good transparency, and on the two sides of touch panel, they are added with electrical wiring, to allow our clients for inputting voltage directly. The purpose of the touch panel with heater is either heating the LCD or defogging the LCD. Whereas, as to how much voltage as well as what energy is required to enable LCD to reach its operating temperature or defogging? AMT has worked a series of data to tell customers about the power density when temperature change, and using the calculation formula of power density, it can tell customer is able to quickly estimate how many watts of voltage is required for achieving the needed temperature.

 Currently, the available heaters offered by AMT are with options in three types of panel resistance values as 5 ohms, 15 ohms, and 50 ohms according to users’ needs, and they are suitable for touch panels between 3.5″ and 12.1″. Many of the clients served by PenMount are with industrial products, and most of them are with demands that they are able to locally make their own correction and adjustment on the parameters as required after product assembly, and due the alterations on the industrial products are greater, there are different requirements on both size as well as glass thickness of touch panels, while there are other issues coming from LCD monitors and other components or problems of noises come from the environments. In order to enable the usages with the actual applications of Projected Capacitive touch products to reach their optimum effects, PenMount offers a software utility to do touch fine-tuning – PCIMset, which is both flexible and easy to operate, allowing our clients to easily make adjustments of their required touch precision and agility in the operating platform of Windows all by themselves through this utility.

There are some functions offered by PenMount utility – PCIMset, and we make examples on some of them as followings:

1. Due one single PenMount touch controller is able to support a range of varied Projected Capacitive touch panels in size, one is able to make selection according to the size of touch panel at the beginning of setup.

2. For different kinds of products, some of them are handheld designs, and the glass of which is required to be both light and thin; but for other products being used in the public locations, for example, public inquiry systems and automatic vending machines are required to use thick glass for increasing the product resistance on impact. In order to satisfy needs from different applications, we offer surface glass at 1.1mm, 1.8mm, 2.8mm, and up to a thickness of 5mm, allowing our clients to make choice on the thickness to their preferences as well as to match their products.

3. In the option of “Sensitivity”, we offer a range of touch agility for adjustment between one to fifteen levels, to give the users with the best operations; at the same time, the user is able to make minor adjustment of precision around the four surrounding edges of touch panel as to up/down/right/left through the embedded function of PCIMset, to maximum the touch precision on the edge of LCD in the similar sizes.

4. PCIMset can make a reverse setup on the operation direction for both X-axis and Y-axis of the touch panel, to enable our clients to make a 90 degrees rotation on the LCD when making assembly on the mechanical components; besides this, we can also put the touch panel with a setup of Single Touch operation, allowing the user to have multiple selections.

5. Through the function of “Host Connection”, our clients can choose the host interface connected with computer that they prefer to use, for example: USB or RS232, or they can even make a selection of I²C along with on-field update firmware.

Silver is a very active metal, with good conductivity, long-lasting effects and relatively low on costs, and oftentimes it is applied largely in the fields of electronics and microelectronics, including touch panel, hybrid electronics, electronic components, and membrane switches. The phenomenon of silver migration is a movement of metal ions, and it usually exists in the track where there are transmissions of electrical potential, and under a certain circumstance, silver atom would be oxidized to silver ion and moved to the cathode. After gaining electron from cathode, it then reduced back to silver atom. With their quick migration, it causes short circuits on two silver traces, led to the malfunction on the electronic equipment.

It is likely to occur silver migration if there is water between two silver traces, and the rate of movement depends upon humidity, temperature, and the volume of voltage, moreover, in the laboratory testing, the phenomenon is proved to happen in a lapse of few seconds. For the conductive material of touch panel, other than ITO, it is relied on the printed sliver traces as the conducting lines to connect to the tail end, in other words, if the touch products are exposed under a highly wet environment for operation, once there is moisture gathered on the tail end of touch panel, plus a suitable temperature and a fixed volume of voltage, then right at the moment, there is likely to occur the phenomenon of silver migration.

Silver migration is an underlying problem, but it is a phenomenon that one can take precautions. When designing touch panels, to avoid the distance of silver conductors being too close from one another, and at the same time, by designing a protective layer, to avoid penetration of moisture in the tail side; besides this, for our clients, when they make mechanical designs on the touch products, they should take into consideration on the prevention of moisture from entry into the system, moreover, by making products with a basic water resistant design either meet IP56 or others, it is able to efficiently prevent the phenomenon of silver migration.

At the beginning of product designs, AMT will put consideration on designs with normal protections into the products, and if there is any findings of silver migration, other than to reinforce on the water-resistant design for our touch products, we will also make recommendations to our client for re-examining the mechanics of their own products, and with improvements on the mechanical design or assembly methods, to reduce the penetration of moisture into the products as less as possible. For the touch panels manufactured by AMT, no matter it is on the aspect of quality, durability and reliance, they are all under our strict scrutiny for qualification one after another, moreover, to make sure that each touch panel delivered to our clients is with the most reliable quality, we continuously make ways to improve it, as well as to work on internal testing, in the hope to offer our clients with the highest confidence on us, to prevent some problems that can be stopped from happening when using touch panels, and this is the commitment as well as responsibility we keep to our clients.

Generally speaking, EMI departs from or enters into a circuit system through two routes- radiation and conduction. The signal radiation is emitted via gaps, slots, holes or other cracks on the metallic case of the system; whereas for signal conduction, it is by way of coupling with power codes or signal or control wires for departure from or entry into the system, afterwards, unrestrained radiate in an open space, hence to be interference sources. One of the efficient ways to decrease EMI is with the approach by adoption to combine both shell mask and interstices mask together. For the interferences in various degrees, AMT offers different designs plus assortments of different materials to assist our clients for solutions on this type of problems. Next on, how does one choose a suitable shielding material? The effectiveness of shielding is usually measured by the shielding effects, for which is meant the ratio between the electromagnetic field strength of E1 in a location without shielding and the electromagnetic field strength of E2 in the same location but with shielding, to represent the degree of decaying on the electromagnetic waves from the shielding, and the unit to describe the shielding efficiency is usually by decibel (dB). Generally speaking, the lower the surface resistivity on the materials, the better the effects of their shielding are. For our test, it shows to use 15 ohms/sq. conductive glass can shield around 20dB EMI which means the strength of electromagnetic fields decays to one of ten of the original one. Currently, AMT offers its clients not only either 50 ohm/sq. or 15 ohm/sq. conducting materials but also conducting glass on an even lower resistivity value of 5 ohm/sq.

No matter what type of value-added resistive touch panels it is (FG, HLT, GFG, LR…), nearly all of them can be added with an extra EMI layer, at the present time, AMT can offer EMI resistive touch panels in the specific sizes between 3.5” and 12.1”, and whereas for the needs as what degree of shielding is required, it should be decision made together with collaboration between you and AMT. Of course, the lower resistance value is, the better effects of EMI layer will be, however, the degree of transparency on touch panel will be relatively lower.

In the future, AMT is also going to make continuous researches as well as to make adoption of mesh less than 1 ohm/sq. as the shielding layer of EMI, which are to be combined together with LR touch panel and GFG LR, in order to meet wider demands from our clients. For this type of mesh conductive material on low impedance value, it has better shielding effects; however, there are some kinds of restrictions on the material as well as assortment limitations, and once when we are in completion of the material plus its possible assortments, we will make further introduction of them in our bi-weekly news journal.

Diabolo Dance Theatre was established in 1986 and formed by a group of young performing artists (around age of 10 to 28 years olds) in Taiwan, through a creativity in wild combinations with diabolo playing, to lead the audiences into the world of stage beyond imagination with a brand new performing styles. Diabolo Dance Theatre has made performances of 300 shows in more than 20 countries, to places all over the world, including National Theatre, New York Lincoln Center, Canada Hummingbird Arts Center, and AICHIExpo. Dome Japan for sharing both happiness and sensations together with people who are with different languages and cultures.

The performance brought by Diabolo Dance Theatre is set at 7:30 on Sunday night, to be prepared and enjoyed by the colleagues of AMT and their families. For the story plots of “Entrance to a Fantastic Journey”, they are centered on a little girl who enters into a strange world full of imaginations, to become friends with Multiple Eye Ogre and Blue Cat, somewhere in-betweens to bring along a series of surprises; the theater has applied vivid colors, and characters in varied styles, together with music, lighting and extraordinary Diabolo techniques, seemingly to make us live through a journey full of wonders. Especially with the application of projection screen at 18 meters in width and 16 meters in height, it make the scene to be so touching when playing to the part on the journey of stars. This is a bravo and splendid performance, and for people who see the shows in live theaters, they just can not stop their exclamations at all, and are totally moved by it, as well as to be profoundly proud of the young performing artists for bringing such an international performance.

The principle of GFG touch panel is to add an extra layer of 0.2mm thin glass on the surface of traditional resistive touch panel, and it is the glass surface where a user make contact with, instead of the film material; glass is a type of High Modulus material, with characteristics not only scratch resistant but also durable to abrasiveness, and the surface hardness can reach 5H on the Mohs Hardness Scale (Mohs), moreover, for the ordinary resistive touch panel, we know that the surface hardness of ITO Film is 3H, and with adoption of GFG structure, the condition which the surface of ordinary resistive touch panel is easily scratched by harden objects can be resolved. For GFG products, their surfaces can be cleansed easily, and as the glass itself is with characteristic against chemical substances, they also act the same way as the ordinary resistive touch panel, able to allow inputs with any kinds of media. As a result, GFG touch panel is particularly suitable for applications in the markets, such as industrial machines, medical instruments, food processing equipment, or to be used on other instruments which are in need of strict operation specification requirements.

Other than offering standard GFG touch panels, AMT also designs GFG products with Low Reflection (GFG LR). On the top of GFG LR Resistive touch panel, there is a layer of thin glass with AR coating for the surface hardness to reach up to 7H, in combination with lower layer of polarizer as well as quarter wave retarder film, to reduce the reflective rate of touch panel smaller than 1.5%, while its light transmission rate is around 76%, and with application on the hand-held equipment (e.g. hand-held instrument, tablet computer, and etc.) operated either outdoor or in the environment of strong sunlight, it will produce the optimal effects.

PenMount Drivers:

For a lot of clients, when they design new products, it is always with expectation to put into some kinds of special operations as well as applications, which might not be the functions already being designed as part of standard versions from PenMount drivers. In such occasions, our PenMount team will make cooperative efforts develop the products with our clients, subsequently to revise our PenMount drivers, in order to meet with the needs of our client systems or to solve any technical problems, allowing the products to be able to reach the usages what they are originally expected by our clients. According to different needs, by modifying installation parameter files, some additional functions can be switched on before installing PenMount drivers, to include: silent mode installation, PenMount gesture utility and calibration point offset adjustment, and at the same time, when completing installation, the drivers will be directly applied to different default settings; for example, opening jitter threshold function and revising default operation mode. Whereas, on the part of customized PenMount drivers, if the clients have certification request for Microsoft WHQL, we will also assist with jobs related to both testing and certification acquisition.

PenMount Firmware And Control Panel:

For PenMount firmware, it is offered with flexible parameter settings, through the modifications on firmware, it is able to operate utility programs by adding extra touch buttons on controllers, and it is similar as the multi-media button on the keyboard. In order to perform the functions preferred by the users, there is no need to go through complex application interfaces for making any changes on settings; instead we can directly communicate with the PenMount touch controllers for sending messages to the main system with the additional control buttons, for which is either through USB or RS-232 interface. Besides, according to the space needs of mechanical components from the client products, either the size of the PenMount control panel can be changed, or to use a hardware pin acted as function of switch-on/off (for example, shutting down touch function), all of which are some customized revisions made on touch control panel or firmware in the purpose to serve our clients by putting them in the first priority.

PenMount Bulletin will be issued on Thursday of the second week of each month from this year. In this issue, the up-to-date development of PenMount projected capacitive touch (PCI) control is briefly presented. After 3 years continuous research and development since 2008, the PCI controller for different touch screen sizes are now ready for customers’ applications. Inherited the spirit of full-driver-support in PenMount resistive touch controller family, more drivers for PCI are to be in place soon.

For PCI touch, in every 4-8mm there is a so-called ‘Drive’ or ‘Sense’ line (or pattern) on the touch screen. The size of a touch screen is therefore the major factor to decide the number of ‘Drive’ or ‘Sense’ to connect to PCI controllers. The table below shows the four controller boards rolled out during last year:

The thickness of the cover glass of PCI can be thinner from 0.4mm up to 2.8mm. This gives the great opportunity of using gloves (medical sanitary, anti-static or that with material in cotton) for single or two fingers touching.

Multiple interfaces including USB/RS232/ I²C/SPI are ready for selection on PenMount PCI control board. Drivers for Windows XP/Vista/7 and Windows Embedded CE are supported. For Linux or Android, the driver in source format is offered for customers own development.

As we have mentioned above, the size of the touch screen is the major factor of selecting the right PenMount PCI controllers. There are still others which also contribute to the proper PCI operation and they are Drive-Sense pin-assignment, thickness of the cover lens, IO interface and others. PenMount PCI controller maintains a set of parameters to adjust the overall performance, e.g. speed and sensitivity. Customers may also check through PCIMset, an in-house developed tool offered by PenMount, to manipulate the parameters for the best PCI control.

It might be necessary for customers to upgrade PenMount PCI firmware in the field. ‘Pmfu’ (PenMount Field Update) is exactly the tool to accomplish the field update to keep the controller the most updated and compatible. You may contact our sales people for more detail.
