PenMount PCI Products Support Multi-Display Applications

04/20/2017 | Bulletin No : PMY17004

There are some applications on the market that require the connection of multiple monitors to one system on the Windows or Linux platforms.  For example, customers will connect two or more projected capacitive (PCI or PCAP) touch panels to one Industrial PC (IPC) system to facilitate operation when located on a production line.  This example is very frequently seen.  In this issue of PenMount Bulletin, we will clearly describe how PenMount PCI products support this type of product application and explain the limitations of and differences in PenMount PCI hardware and software.

The Windows 7/8/10 OS has a HID device driver built-in.  Thus, it can directly support PenMount PCI touch products and does not need additional driver installation.  After initially assembling the touch panel to the display, if you move your finger up to down but the cursor moves down to up, this means the matching starting positions of the touch panel and display are different.  At this time, we can use PenMount PCIUtility to adjust panel orientation.  When a customer’s system is connect to a number of touchscreens, the “Tablet PC Feature” setting mechanism in Microsoft OS can be used to adjust the mapping of multiple displays and multiple PenMount PCI touch devices so the cursor can appear on the corresponding display during operation.

In certain projects, due to system limitations, when two PCI touchscreens are in simultaneous operation, a situation will occur where the cursor jumps unstably between the two screens.  For example, if the cursor is currently on screen B, when screen A is touched, the cursor will jump from screen B to screen A and affect the actions of touch operation. In terms of this type of situation, PenMount’s solution is to install a special version PenMount driver. The PenMount console will show multiple PCI controllers each with its own ID to allow users to disable PCI touch devices individually and avoid the conflicting cursor situation between devices.

Recently, we have also received customer requests to use multiple monitor applications on Linux OS. In terms of software support, if customers use the X Server graphical interface, they can use the built-in xinput system utility to manually assign the display corresponding to touch input devices. Of particular note is “cannot be operated simultaneously” is a limitation common to all screens. If customers need to temporarily terminate the touch function of one particular screen, they can do so through the xinput utility.  Since Linux is an open source platform, it has diverse setup options.  If you have multiple monitor requirements, you are welcome to contact our sales window.  We will assess feasibility according to your requirements.

PenMount’s design philosophy involves added consideration on behalf of customers and understanding real customer needs.  Through providing comprehensive touch solutions, we help customers introduce PCI touch products.  The smooth progress of your projects is our ultimate goal.  PenMount has also prepared complete utilities to satisfy your common user setting requirements and facilitate the design and development of your products.  If you have any questions or product inquiries, you are welcome to contact our sales window and we will provide you with further information.
