Touch Screen Success Story

The end customer, in this case, is INOMED, one of the leading manufacturers of medical equipment in surgical rooms. Due to the unique needs of medical applications, INOMED and SCHURTER tested and qualified the products from AMT for over a year and confirmed that our products meet the medical safety test standards. SCHURTER designed in and integrated our standard projected capacitive (PCAP) touch panel and PenMount touch controller for their C2 Xplore, which monitors nerves during thyroid surgery to ensure the laryngeal nerves are unaffected during the operation. This story is about how AMT provides satisfying support and how we will tackle unforeseen challenges to serve our clients.
Before distributing the products, all the devices meet the medical standards required. However, after six months, 5-10% of the devices were affected by an unknown source. Identifying the sources, adapting the firmware to avoid interferences, and updating the firmware became the challenge of AMT.
Specialists from AMT first help the end-user identify the source of interference. It turns out there were interference signals generated by electric surgical knives and lights in the operation room. We further advised them to measure the frequency range of the signals and set out to resolve the issue after receiving the data. After adjusting the firmware parameters such as median filter, spike filter, and extended frequency hopping through PenMount PCIUtility, and successfully adapted the working frequency to bypass the local interference!
The second challenge surfaced as AMT provided the solution. To update the firmware, utility needs to be installed. How could the distributor update the firmware with the least time and man power? The client again sought help from AMT. We worked on the update and package the firmware using a command line to make the update pain-free. If the hospital is equipped with wireless signal, they could even update the firmware easily though internet.

Case 2 : PCAP Touch Solutions with Anti-UV Design
The client, in this case, is a leading manufacturer in the heavy industry. They specialize in producing equipment such as cranes, bulldozers, and excavators. Since LCD is a top priority for industrial computers (IPC), the client thus used the touch modules provided by their LCD supplier in their products.
Excavators are usually parked outdoors. The machine must have good UV radiation resistance to ensure its best performance. However, hazing and air bubbles appeared when the client performed a UV test on the touch module. The client has successfully collaborated with AMT, so they turned to AMT to seek a better solution.
After an in-depth examination, we found that the original touch module does not have an anti-UV design. This leaves the plastic vulnerable to sunlight which causes yellowing, white fog, bubbles, and even cracking of the touch panel. AMT projected capacitive (PCAP) touch products with anti-UV design pass the ASTM G154 Cycle 1 for 1,000 hours & MIL-STD-810H Pro 1 for 1,000 hours test and can meet the customer's full-spectrum test specifications. Display readability is generally low under direct sunlight, but the optical bonding service provided by AMT could avoid such issues. Lucent Gel is silicon-based. Compared with acrylic-based LOCA, Lucent Gel has higher stability and stronger resistance to extreme temperatures and UV. There is rarely cracking, foaming and yellowing caused by UV. It is a perfect choice for outdoor applications!
With the touch module already incorporated into the design, the cost of re-modifying the mechanism will be too high. To cope with the issue, AMT customizes the touch module to meet the needs of the customer's organization. The client trusts AMT can deliver an anti-UV, very readable and weather-resistant product with satisfying quality and placed the order with us!
The customer in this case specialized in developing and manufacturing small and medium-sized LCD touch modules. They produce TFT, OLED and LCM modules but acquired touch screen and optical bonding services from third party suppliers.
For this project, the client had highly specific needs. Their original suppliers were not able to accept special designs, small quantities, or technical modifications. After the customer learned that the original supplier would not customize the design, they contacted AMT, hoping that we could solve the problem. Our sales person immediately contacted them by phone after receiving the request. They identified the pain points and analyzed the issues in the original design. They then developed an innovative plan to provide the very best solution to meet the client's needs.
The challenge in this case was the product depth of industrial plastic frames. Because of the design and the depth of the frame, rollers cannot be used for bonding. Additionally, most plastic frames are black which absorb light. Therefore UV cannot be used to cure LOCA or “liquid optically clear adhesive”.
Lucent Gel SOCA, or “solid optically clear adhesive”, produced by AMT, is the best solution for this type of product. Lucent Gel is Silicon-based, which is soft and pliable with good defoaming (debubble) performance. Coupled with a special bonding fixture, it is suitable for optical bonding of plastic frames at all depths. Last but not least, if there is any problem in the manufacturing process, Lucent Gel has significantly better reworkability than LOCA.
